Awhile ago, my friend Miguel and I decided to work on a comic project together. It would be a short piece, designed mostly as a demo to showcase our respective talents and provide us the much needed excuse we’d been looking for to work together on something. Miguel is a fantastic artist so having him draw it was obvious, and I’m okay when it comes to the words so the task of writing it fell to me.

After batting around several million ideas we settled on a short story idea I’d had in the back of my mind for awhile called “The Last Confession of Jacob Valentine”. It was a sort of genre-hopping piece of detective fiction, with film noir overtones, the waded generously into the pool of horror. It was a lot of fun and gave Miguel a chance to play with black and white, which he truly excels at.

The comic is now finished, and I may be a little biased, but I think it came out pretty smashing. Miguel just knocked the art out of the park.

And the best part? You can read the whole thing for free online. How’s that for a slice of fried gold?

I want to start off by saying that Cine-Rama is NOT dead. Things have just been hectic in both Christian’s and mine’s lives the past month or so and we haven’t had a time where we’re both free to sit down and record. The good news is that should be changing soon though. We’re going to come back strong with new reviews, our first interview, and our long-awaited Twin Peaks episode. Just please be patient with us.

One of the reasons that Christian has been busy is he’s been directing that feature film we wrote, Sweetmint. But the filming for that is now 99.99% done. That’s right people! We did it! We freakin’ made a movie!!!

In less than two weeks time I will be returning to school where I’ll be attending classes to get a BFA in Applied Media Arts with a concentration with animation. I’m looking forward to it as I feel I’ve been in a bit of a rut lately. This will be a big help.

I’d be negligent in my nerd duties if I didn’t mention the Guild music video that premiered online today. It’s called “Do You Want to Date My Avatar” and it stars all the characters from the Guild.

To answer Felicia Day’s question in the song, the answer is yes.

This week in Robotics . . .

“Three employees of Japan’s Cyberdyne robotics company recently demonstrated a new “people-assisting” device: an exoskeleton that could help injured or disabled people walk. The system is called “HAL 5,” and three prototypes of the technology paraded through Tokyo this week.”

Am I the only one just a little disturbed that the company is called Cyberdyne and the robot bits are named HAL? Macabre sense of humor to be sure.

Guess I should probably announce this sooner rather than later.  My friend Ryan King and I are soon going to launch STALE POPCORN, a webcomic about life in a movie theater.  I’ll keep you updated here about the project as it moves forward.   We’ve got bunches of ideas, so it should be a fun ride.

Something else I wanted to get out there was a link to this article on theforce.net entitled “Young Padawan Needs Our Help”

“Dear Friends,

A friend of mine I went to high school with recently found out her 3 year old daughter has Cancer. Her name is Maddie and she is just adorable. It breaks my heart to see anyone, especially young children have to suffer through chemo treatments and long hospital stays. The parents ( Kelly & Ray ) are having a hard time making ends meet. Kelly has depleted her leave and is not drawing a salary. The ambulance ride alone was more than $3K, which is not covered by health insurance.

They are having a benefit at the Taberg Legion ( Taberg, New York ) on September 12th for Maddie. If there is ANYTHING you could donate for the raffles, that would be wonderful. Here is a recent update from her grandmother.”

Anyone who knows me knows that I’m a strong supporter of the 501st Stormtrooper Legion, what they do, and their work with children’s charities. There’s a reason I link to the 501st site off of this blog. I have a friend in the Legion and hope to join a garrison myself some day. This is right in their wheelhouse and I felt a duty to spread the word.
