I can’t believe I haven’t thought of doing a version of this post before!  It seems like such an obvious topic for me.  I’m going to count down my personal favorite film directors from ten to one and list what my personal favorite film by them is.

Are you all comfortable?

Let’s begin.

Edgar Wright
Favorite Film By: Shaun of the Dead

John Huston
Favorite Film By: The Maltese Falcon

Fritz Lang
Favorite Film By: M

Hayao Miyazaki
Favorite Film By: Spirited Away

Clint Eastwood
Favorite Film By: Letters from Iwo Jima

Charlie Chaplin
Favorite Film By: Limelight

Christopher Nolan
Favorite Film By: The Dark Knight

Alfred Hitchcock
Favorite Film By: Rope

Steven Spielberg
Favorite Film By: Raiders of the Lost Ark

Akira Kurosawa
Favorite Film By: Seven Samurai

I’d have liked to have put Neill Blomkamp or Duncan Jones on this list, but they have not made enough films for me to feel justified in doing so.

On Plotting September 10, 2010

Plotting stories is never a straight line, no matter your best intentions.  At least it isn’t with me.

Instead the mental picture that might be better to use would be a string of beads.  Each individual idea comes to you as a single crystal clear bead, unrelated to the others.  When you have enough beads for a story you seem to have a big pile on the floor in front of you.  Then your job is to string them all in the right order to have it make any kind of reasonable sense.

That connecting thread is ESSENTIAL.  You cannot have a story without that flow.

I am very good at coming up with beads.  I’m less good at stringing them together.  I see where I need to improve.

In a sleepless night the other day I couldn’t get these words out of my head. I’m not a poet, but it was the only way to get them out of my body and to give me rest.

This poem is in a style I normally wouldn’t like. However, the style fit the subject matter . . . the racing thoughts associated with a manic episode.

By Keith W. Cunningham

Someone stuck a needle of speed into my brain.

Opened the valve and my thoughts poured out past the filters that were never switched out.

Synaptic short-circuit.

Manic mental megadrumps.

Brains were never meant to run overclocked.

We ain’t computers. No factory machines.

Boom! Boom! Boom!

Firecracker ideas, half-remembered faces, dreams we killed and others we still cling to.

First loves. Lost loves. Hopes for future loves.

And rage!

Shit. Shit. SHIT!

It’s going to be a long night and it’s just me and these walls and the valve won’t close.

Drywall is a horrible listener.
