The DC Announcement May 31, 2011

Hold on to your underwear, kids.  It’s getting all Crisis of Infinite Crises up in this piece.

It was announced today that beginning in September DC comics will apparently be rebooting nearly their entire line and putting out fifty new number one issues with younger versions of our heroes in revamped costumes designed by Jim Lee.  And I can’t shake the feeling that haven’t we done all this before?  At least twice?

There hasn’t been much announced yet (all we know is that Justice League of America will relaunch in September with Geoff Johns and Jim Lee, and that the team will be composed of Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, Aquaman, and the Flash), so I’ll reserve any real judgement.  Rather this blog post will detail a list of questions I have.

1) How far backwards in age are we taking the characters?  Are they all literally going to be at the start of their careers again, or will the main heroes have been around a bit?

2) What about older heroes like the Justice Society?  Do they vanish from existence?  Best case scenario I see here is if we get a period piece JSA book set in the thirties.

3) I guess Superman is American again?  Fox News can relax, at least.

4) More important . . . is Superman going to once again indeed be the last Kryptonian?  As much love as so many people have for Supergirl, Connor Kent, Kandor, and hundreds of Phantom Zone prisoners . . . it certainly does take something away from the whole “Last Son of Krypton” angle.

5) Apparently dead only means dead until the whole of reality gets rebooted?  So much for the promise at the end of Blackest Night.  Who are we going to see come back, and if they’re rebooting everything so soon afterwards, what was the point of there being a select few resurrectees in Brightest Day?

6) Can Ted Kord be around now?  How about Ryan Choi?  Please?

7) I guess all of the horrible crap that went down with Red Arrow/Arsenal is now a moot point.  I can’t help but feel good about that.  But then again, will there even be such a character in this world, or will Roy Harper be Speedy in the Teen Titans?

8 ) The thing I’m most excited about is the prospect of the changes Grant Morrison made to Batman being undone.  No more psychotic brat Damien Wayne, please?

9 ) Then again, if Damien is gone and we’re going back to square one, I guess that means that my favorite Robin Tim Drake ceases to be as well?  If we’re back at the beginning Dick Grayson is Robin, and while that’s okay, I don’t wanna see Tim not exist.  Some kind of roll for him in the universe, at least eventually please?

10 ) Will there be a Batgirl book?  Will it be Barbara Gordon?  Does it take something away from the character to pull her out of the wheelchair?  I don’t know.

11) What’s up with the collar on Superman’s costume, yo?

12) Is this Earth-1, Earth-2, New Earth, Newer Earth?

13) Billy Batson as Captain Marvel?  Yes?  Please?

I guess the most that I can hope for is good stuff to come out of this.  I’m curious, but also worried.  Don’t burn us, DC, please.

I really want to read an awesome Batman book . . . .

The other day my friend Christian came to me with an interesting mental exercise to write a blog post about. Knowing me as the Star Wars fan that I am the question he put forth was this . . . assume that Star Wars had never been made, that it was sitting on a shelf for 30+ years and was being made today. Who would I cast in the film?

An unenviable task, to be sure, but I love a challenge. Fortunately, Christian let me off the hook on one count. I only had to recast people with human faces. C-3P0 and Vader can still clearly be voiced by Anthony Daniels and James Earl Jones respectively. Peter Mayhew can still obviously handle Chewbacca.

So that leaves humans.

I told him I would need a few days and here’s what I’ve come up with. And I even went and did some more obscure characters just for fun!

LUKE SKYWALKER

For the lead role of Luke Skywalker I picked acclaimed young British actor Andrew Garfield.  He is simply a fantastic actor.  You’ll next seem him in the big budget reboot The Amazing Spider-Man.

HAN SOLO

Nathan Fillion.  Too obvious?  Yes, it is.  But there’s a reason for that.

PRINCESS LEIA

Olivia Thirlby.  She’s talented.  She’s sassy.  And she’s sexy.  She’s been floating on the rim of lots of big projects for years now, but has never seemed to have found that one role that would shoot her into the stratosphere.

OBI WAN KENOBI

This was a tough call for me.  Who do you get that can replace the gentle wisdom of Alec Guiness?  Nobody really, so maybe do something unexpected.  I got to thinking that George Lucas originally wanted Toshiro Mifune to play the role of Obi Wan, and suddenly Ken Watanabe became a very viable candidate for me.

GRAND MOFF TARKIN

Another toughie, because you can never replace Peter Cushing.  But you can get another really great actor.  That is why I’ve picked Ben Kingsley.

OWEN LARS

This was one of the first people I thought of, before I did any of the main characters.  Stellan Skarsgard just feels right as the man who raised Luke Skywalker.

BERU LARS

Maybe I’m just thinking too much of her role in Almost Famous, but Frances McDormand seems appropriately maternal for a galaxy far, far away.

WEDGE ANTILLES

The man who eventually winds up with two Death Stars painted on the side of his X-Wing.  I have picked Scoot McNairy, who was excellent in the 2010 film Monsters.

Photobucket

Photobucket

ADMIRAL DODONNA

The rebel admiral who plans the defense of Yavin IV against the Death Star.  Who better than Donald Sutherland?

Photobucket

BIGGS DARKLIGHTER

Luke’s best friend from back on Tatooine eventually joined the rebellion and grew a pretty pimp mustache.  I can see Colin Hanks bringing and honesty and loyalty to this small but key part.

JEK PORKINS

Jek Porkins appeared on screen for about 30 second and became a legend.  He deserves to be cast!  I can think of no better choice than British funnyman James Corden.

DOCTOR EVAZON

AKA the guy who hassles Luke in the cantina and gets his arm chopped off.  Wouldn’t Andy Serkis fit just right?

They Laughed At the Right Bits May 3, 2011

. . . which was really all you can ask for, right?

Hello all! Keith here. Christian asked me to write up some thoughts about the recent Edinboro premiere that we had for Sweetmint.

This was an interesting experience for me because I hadn’t yet seen the completed film all the way through. Some time back I’d seen a cut that was a work-print, but there hadn’t been any color correcting, scoring, and the dialogue track was far from complete. Not only did I get to see it with all these things, but credits too!

Speaking of credits, I particularly dug the opening credit montage done to Molly Lewis’s song “My Hope”. I think it set the tone for the film quite nicely.

There weren’t a lot of people who attended the event. We didn’t really have a lot of notice to get much in the way of advertising done, but the people who did come seemed to enjoy it (except maybe the one girl who loudly sighed at the “chicks be crazy with the hormones” line). I wrote that line, so I take full credit for any offense created.

What can I say? Seeing words you wrote performed on a big screen is a surreal and wonderful experience. I haven’t been as involved with the project as Christian, but this is still my baby.

Speaking of Christian. . . guess who fell asleep during his own premiere screening? I know, right?

I won’t have a table this year, but I’ll be at the show, and to have some walking around money I’ve decided to do some super cheap commissions that I can hand deliver.

I will also be doing them for people who aren’t at the show, and I’ll ship them out to you. I’d just need an additional $5 to cover the shipping costs.

They will be $10 for 11X17 bristol board, fully inked, up to two characters. $5 for each additional character above that. Anyone interested?

Anyone who is interested e-mail me at keithwcunningham@gmail.com
